Major

Major, born in 1998, is an Appendix Horse, a cross between a Thoroughbred and a Quarter Horse. He was assigned to and served dutifully the NYPD Mounted Unit, Badge # 0017, located in New York City.  He safeguarded Yankee Stadium, Times Square, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. His badge number was created by indicating the year he joined (2000) and he was the 17th horse to join the NYPD Mounted Unit.  It was retired in 2011 when he was released from duty to retire at Spirit’s Promise. This occurred after he sustained an injury to his left hock deeming him unfit for duty.  Now at his forever home, Major has assumed the position of the Alpha Male of the entire herd and is believed he is still on duty just as the protector of the farm. With an unbelievable presence, he commands the attention of anyone who is brave enough to approach him. It is fascinating to observe a horse who has been trained to disregard two-thirds of his prey animal instincts to flight and freeze and taught only to go into danger. While there’s no danger here at Spirit’s Promise, except for an occasional raccoon, Major will examine every human who steps foot on the property. You’ll notice him in a paddock with just one other horse because he’s a loner, trained to bond with people more than with a herd.  At Spirit’s Promise, we’ve given him the best life after what he has done for the mounted police officers, the Yankees, and the beautiful city of New York. 

In addition to his meals consisting of Hay and Grains, Major also receives a daily doses of Mirra Coat, a supplement to keep his skin strong and protected, Devils Claw, an anti-inflammatory, and Vermont Pro, a prebiotic/probiotic.
